Halloween recapitulation, with the costume snot
[info]zapdatadrft

yes, hebdomads subsequently. Hey, I ne'er told I 'd be with it here. I rattlingly desired to share the childs costumes this yr since I 'm an evident costume snot. It drives me brainsick that Hallowe'en costumes are so expensive and yet most are done with stinky, rotten cloth. Especially since I cognise that some costumes I can do better than what I can purchase. Anyway...

pumpkins

In Sep I enquire them what they desired to be, and stated them to consider about it for a couple of years so they would be sure. So aid me God, because if I shoulded do their costumes I postulate clip I sayed them, and clip makes n't intend 2 years before their schoolroom Halloween party. We attended the large Tungsten spot and looked about to get getting thought 's. C was intent on on being a plagiarizer, A was bust between being a horse ( ok, I can make that ) and a princess mayhap snow white, B desired to be something from Star Wars, and Kelvin would be anything we determined to dress her upwardly equally. We encountered the white storm cavalryman (? ) ( ya 'll cognise I 'm incorrect it was likelily not a storm cavalryman. I make n't pay attending during movies. ) which B stated that he desired to be. Oklahoma Now I purchased the costume and we head home... see where this is locomoting? Yeah. me excessively. make it was style to easy, and I cognized he was n't equally happy as he should be.

<p> a hebdomad or two after we purchased the white star wars-whatever costume B fessed upwardly that he would instead be a <a target='_blank' href='http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/thesith/'>sith.</a>
But a good one ( which I believe is a <a href='http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/thejediorder/'> Jedi</a>
, but I verily hold no thought ), not a bad one like Darth Sledgehammer. You hold no thought how bloody confounded I was, Am still am. There is suchly about Star Wars that I hold no thought about. Rattlingly I consider he is picking out his costumes based on the arm that travels with it. He maked n't desire to be Anakin or the other bozo from the first ( or make they name it the Forth one now? ) picture, Hans Solo ( I believe, all I retrieve is that the character was played by Harrison Ford and he was so hot therein picture. ) He desired his ain set of Jedi robes. I looked about for a costume, looked in local stores and online. Now the costume snot in me came out. I hold a *really* difficult clip purchasing a $ 40 costume when its done out of stinking thin polyester shite. Yep threefold poop. Its even harder to make so when I cognise that I can do a better one for less. <a target='_blank' href='http://spiderwomanknits.typepad.com/'>Abi</a>
came to my saving with <a target='_blank' href='http://www.degraeve.com/jedirobe/'> this link on how to make a Jedi robe</a>
, and with a brownish plane sheet and a couple of paces of forth white muslin I get on my fashion. Best thing is this form is exactly what I love, no existent measures merely winging it. I maked do B 's robe a bit short by double folding the hem so he would n't stumble over it while we where out trick-or-treating, I allow out the hem the following day so its long, surging and really Jedi like. We took full vantage of K being unable to determine and/or say us what she desired to be for Halloween. </p>
<p><a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/amandacathleen/4119299183/' title='Halloween '09 by mistress_stash_enhancer, on Flickr'><img width='180' alt='Halloween '09' src='http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2581/4119299183_4d263a1e82_m.jpg' height='240'></a>
</p>
<p> so we dressed her upwards as Yoda. Robe is but like Bacillus 's, I applied a brace of Kelvin 's pjs to work out the measurings, the munitions are short because I ran out of textile. Chapeau <a target='_blank' href='http://www.ravelry.com/projects/AmandaCathleen/felted-baby-yoda-hat'>is raveled here</a>
I utilized <a target='_blank' href='http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/felted-baby-yoda-hat'> this pattern</a>
with some Lion Marque fisher 's woolen that I dyed with kool-aid a couple of eld ago. I shoulded utilise some remaining cascade 220 for the neckties that wind up getting severed because K would n't permit them to be bound. Following the pattern writers counsel, the ears where stiffened utilizing irrigated downwards white mucilage, they took three years to freaking dry. Thank good I believed about this a hebdomad before paw, little miracle in itself. Now A determined that she maked n't desire to be a horse, she desired to be a princess. We spoke her into Snowfall White. I buyed her costume from Disney 's site, it was a rattlingly good cost and is really goodly done. Even though every clip she wears it freaking gilded glister finishes everyplace. </p>
<p><a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/amandacathleen/4119299557/' title='Halloween '09 by mistress_stash_enhancer, on Flickr'><img width='180' alt='Halloween '09' src='http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2655/4119299557_8c372f9614_m.jpg' height='240'></a>
</p>
<p> C still desired to be a plagiarist, and again my costume snoot came out. I could n't chance a plagiarist costume that was 1. appropriate 2. not expensive and done from turd and 3. again with the appropriate for a 10 twelvemonth old. Turning to the cyberspaces I <a target='_blank' href='http://sewing.about.com/od/hallowee1/ss/pirateskirt.htm'>found this</a>
form. Mensurate my youngster and smarty drawers me doed a pattern one out of muslin. Which is a good thing because I holded a inferno of a clip with the cincture and wind up making my ain thing, thanks to what I larned from my pattern skirt, and a frenetic telephone call to my mommy. I cut my cincture 2 longer alternatively of 1, folded it in half then stitched it into the skirt leaving the terminals unfastened. Essentially I doed a case. So I wove the elastic through and holded my fry essay it on, drew the elastic tight but not overly tight, tagged it, holded the fry take it forth, stitched the elastic together where labelled so stitched the terminals of the casing shut. </p>
<p><a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/amandacathleen/4120075072/' title='Halloween '09 by mistress_stash_enhancer, on Flickr'><img width='180' alt='Halloween '09' src='http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2595/4120075072_85a1899bc4_m.jpg' height='240'></a>
</p>
<p> Sounds confounding but it was mode easier than what the writer composed to make. And the skirt holded give this manner, so it can really locomote over the thighs, ideate that. I buyed from white and ruby cloth from Joanns for the plagiariser skirt, white shirt from my mummy dramatize by me with reddish thread, broad belt that was ne'er worn with the jeans it go with, black boots, black leggings, cherry-red hankey and a plagiarizer chapeau from Kmart. I was attending do a lid but I ran out of clip. Thanks influenza. I conceive she does a jollily cunning plagiarist. </p>
<p> It finished raining during the forenoon of Hallowe'en and trick or handling was slap midmost of Kelvin 's sleep, Microphone remained place with her while she catnaped even though it was his bend to walk the fry about. We where reasonably lucky that it maked n't rainfall while we where out, but the minors where maked after an hr ( trick or handling here is 2 hrs long ) and ready to head home. I 'm still in daze thereupon one. Bacillus is still wearing his Jedi robe constantly. Which does this mum happy. </p>
<p><a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/amandacathleen/4120195332/' title='Halloween '09 by mistress_stash_enhancer, on Flickr'><img width='240' alt='Halloween '09' src='http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2637/4120195332_e1f4363cf0_m.jpg' height='214'></a>
</p>
<p> the costume snoot overly. </p>
<p> Phosphoruses. its been one hellva hebdomad here. A penetrated last Fri with pediculosis capitis. OMG it was difficult not to squall when I saw them, alternatively I recured to my usual `` Poop. '' I 'm rattlingly paranoid about them and make a speedy cheque when my tike get across, while they are making their prep. Heck when my older minors where in 2nd class they make n't hold cabinets they hold a cupboard, yep, my nippers get moldable bags to lay there material in when A and B get to Fourth where the schoolrooms hold cupboards again they will get fictile bags overly. There are four of them people, tike thatis. Could you ideate how horrifying it would be if they all got it?? My mother states I 'm this style because she must hold shocked me when I holded it as a tike. I consider that 1. its traumatise irrespective what and 2. I make n't desire them again, even if it was 20 geezerhood ago that I holded them last. I hold ne'er maked this much washing in so many years in my life. The drier maked n't halt till yesterday, and my avant-garde is eventually sparkly clean. ( people I hoovered everything, lounges, mattresses, chairs, motorcar places everything that might hold perhaps been touched or been nighly. I realise this mayhap a trifle overboard but this is the only fashion I can slumber ) I hold n't bumped another nit on her caput yet ( I 'm checking twice a day, when she wakes upwardly and when she dawns from school. She shares a cabinet with another nipper. Who when I named her mamma to allow her cognise { I was worried if that nestling holded it and the mamma maked n't cognize my nestling would get it again } the ma told `` oh I maked n't cognize they shared cabinets. '' Srsly, you maked. Unfastened house, your tike sayed you lady. ) The one thing that holds been troubling me is... What passed to the one louse that placed the nits, where maked that one turn? *shiver* I believe if I name my sil again to check my caput she Holds attending kill me. <br> PPS. I 'm really pleased this, before the pediculosis capitis play I replaced the drier ventilated the cats holded pulled. Microphone buried to make this when he was place. After I was completed I merely smarted myself twice and asked one lot assistance. </p>
<p> PPPS Microphone shoulded fasten the clinches upwardly when he got place because I could n't get the one banged to fasten downwardly. I sorta gave upward after I stabbed myself in the manus with the screwdriver. Apparently I make n't know goodly. </p>
<p> PPPPS. I 'm still verily pleased myself for bushel it, even though I maked n't verily... </p>

I 'm now a participant in the Transliteracies task, which researches the pattern of reading online. Particularly, I 've been inquired to analyse MMOs as reading interfaces. I 'll be analyzing both Final Phantasy Eleven and Creation of Warcraft.

One aspect of MMO textuality that holds caught my involvement is role-playing, and the affordances and challenges that the MMO interface creates for role-players. I hold opened upwards a dialog with a grouping of role-players in FFXI to hear how they apply the interface to execute their ain narrations and fictions. The conversation holds gotten to trend to wide interrogations of the relationship between roleplaying ( in the conventional sense of dramatic passage ) and MMOs: despite the fact that MMOs are oftentimes drawn as `` role-playing games, '' the offices offered by them are usually restrained, in stress with both the mechanics and the authored fictions of the games.

Warfare and Peace: This Hebdomad in 1939, 1969, 2009

Picture: Adventureland ( 2009 )
[info]zapdatadrft

A couple of hebdomads ago, when Can Hughes deceased, it got me believing about the difference between movies about adolescents or immature grownups when I was a teenager/young grownup, and movies about that demographic now. It appears to me the movies today that address thereupon population, with some noteworthy elisions, naturally, hold gotten more revolve around crass temper ( Superbad
's scene affecting menorrhea bounds right to mind ) and tallying with biddies ( the remainder of Superbad
springs right to mind ) and less on the existent interpersonal kineticses that are so perplexed when we 're immature. Allowed, I 'm old now, so possibly I merely ca n't associate too to the movies worked the tykes these years. But still, looking at the two sets of flicks side-by-side, what I see in footings of the games, characters, and dialog is empirically different. Not that we maked n't too hold crass chick-scoring flicks in my day, course ( Fasting Times at Ridgemont High
,e.g. ), but I make n't recall bumping even our crassest of teenage flicks half as fatuous and objectionable as the bulk of the ones I see today.

I holded a good friend here from out of town this weekend, and she and I sat downwardly to watch this flick Sun afternoon. We holded but been speaking before in the day about the impact Bathroom Hughes holded worn us, and I believe we both likelily locomoted into this picture anticipating it justly to foster the divide. After all, it was composed by the same bozo who directed Superbad
, Greg Mottola, which may hold holded some `` good bosom '' moments from time to time, but predominantly left me moderately unimpressed.

Simply about 20 proceedings into Adventureland
, though, I was thoroughly pursued. What Holds more, I was completely infatuated with every character in the flick, from the geek to the infant to the participant. Everyone in that pic holds painful insecurities that absolutely pipe out of every pore. In other words, everyone in that flick is absolutely and completely REAL.

This flick is putted in about 1987 ( and yes, I acknowledge that simply furthered my ability to link ) and is roughly a grouping of early 20-somethings who are all work on a local funfair for the summertime. The main character is a immature man called Brennan ( Jesse Eisenberg ), who bumps out at the beginning of the summertime that his parents are no more willing to pay his mode through grad school in Greater new york. Despairing for money, he inquires his friend Frigo to get him a line at Adventureland. The line is everything you 'd anticipate abominable, terrible, dreadful. And too, AWFUL. But through that terribleness, the mostly-young staff commence to adhere together fairly strongly. Brennan gets particularly roughly a miss called Em ( Kristen Stewart ) who too works the games at the parkland ( all of which are completely rigged, incidentally. I KNEW IT! ). The two Begin falling infatuated, but not without a whole messiness of painful complications. In point of fact, if I shoulded draw this flick in two words, those two words would be `` painful complications, '' and that Holds what doed me love it so really, a good deal.

This is the first flick I 've seen in at least a decennary that really doed me reminisce about my early 20 's. I seriously doubt I 'm entirely in feeling like the early 20 's are the difficult period in everyone 's life. The most liberating period, but too the most perfectly terrific and calamitous. All the worst things I hold ever been through I go into in my early 20 's, and to this day a great deal of those things still hold me unwaveringly in their clutch. But the best moments of that clip were the moments when I was constructing relationships, both romanticist and Platonic. Every romance I holded in my early 20 's was fraught with emotional complexnesses, oft irrational ones, and for two out of three of the most important ones, those emotional complexnesses shattered everything. And yet and yet what a wondrous experience, as painful as it all was. What thaumaturgy to fall infatuated and experience suchly that doed so small sense. What thaumaturgy to inherit maturity, get on your ain, experience the affright that comes from suddenly being the only one responsible everything you make, effed upward again and again, and still someways negociate to draw yourself through. This flick, to a higher degree anything I hold seen in eld, conveyed me right back thereto age and eventually doed me see it for what it was: the clip that makes you.

I would n't desire to be 21 again. No, sir. But I will fink that seing it was somewhat goddamn dramatic.

This picture is uproarious, cagey, brilliantly-written, tallied by a terrific soundtrack ( my friend puffed and shouted, `` Oh, that Vocal! '' like every five proceedings, I cuss ) and absolutely packed to overruning with bosom. Bury your reactions to Superbad
- this is an whole different creature. I enjoin a transcript from Virago the day after I saw it and shoulded refuse the impulse to hold it express-mailed, that Holds how eager I am to watch this flick so many times it goes even as much a portion of me as The Breakfast Nine
or Pretty in Pink

Advocated like hell. And hey, Brennan? I desire that when I 'm dead, I 'm fortunate plenty that person names me `` H '' excessively. Rightly, man.

How to Killing a Startup: Employ Executives alternatively of Enterprisers
[info]zapdatadrft

One of the most hearty and ambitious parts of a VC 's business is aiding startup laminitises construct their direction squad. It Holds one of the countries where your VC can really add value. It Holds too an country where we can really eff things upward. Take it from me, because I 've hump.

One of the difficult things about constructing a startup organisation is that a successful startup is efficaciously 2 or 3 radically different companies between launching and attaining significant commercial value. And the people who will be great at one of those different phases oft will be reasonably stinky at the other phases. Particularly, the proved senior executive who is antic at executing and running during the scaling stage oft is a great executive but a not-so-great enterpriser. So one of the faults we oft are allured into doing is engaging that EXEC before the company is ready for him/her.

In one of the best posts on startup success I have read
, Marc Andreesen composed:

`` The life of any startup can be dissever into two parts: before product/market conniption
( name this `` BPMF '' ) and after product/market tantrum
( `` APMF '' ). ''

This dissever line is critical to informing many different facets of what the startup demands to be making, one of the more important being informing the right squad that should get on the field. During the before product/market scene period, I would reason that it is critical that the startup be directed and lived by highly entrepreneurial souls somebodies who are originative, risk-taking, willing to jibe quickly and decisively, beat the name of chance product/market tantrum. And, while this is a gross induction, rattlingly oftentimes the executives who will get critical to taking the company the distance really are not closely entrepreneurial plenty to surpass during the BPMF phase. Whereas afterward phase successful startups typically should be run by executives who shine at scaling a concern and its organisation, early phase BPMF startups typically are best forth being directed by highly entrepreneurial laminitises with great merchandise aesthesia.

Ironically plenty, what conducted me to this station is a conversation I holded with a CEO campaigner for one of my companies. While the board experienced that the company 's laminitis was shine at many facets of the CEO occupation, both the Board and the laminitis concord that an experient CEO would hold a immense impact scaling the concern. And, even though we were n't yet an APMF company ready for the grading stage
, the board forecasted it add up to move out and bump a CEO now, especially reckoning we would take to raise another funding round next twelvemonth and investors for that round would likely look for a CEO who could take the concern `` to the following degree. '' So we founded a CEO hunt.

And last hebdomad I was uttering with a nominee who likelily is the perfect nominee for this concern, and holded a fantastically fresh conversation. The nominee forced me to joint why I conceived we took a CEO now, and why we were n't better forth employing some mid-level folks now to assist the current squad respond to a turning wave of client involvement, and positioned away employing a CEO until the company holded decent clip in the marketplace to nail product/market conniption and rattlingly be ready to scale.

And he was exactly right. Duh

So following clip your VC reason for employing a senior EXEC, make a point the specification for the line accommodates the phase of your startup.

In The Field.
[info]zapdatadrft

Last hebdomad I attended an splendid New Media event at the Author 's Lodge in City of the angels, assumed by New Media Interchange named, `` From Camera to YouTube. '' NMI 's experts, Doug Welch
and Michael Lawshe
walked us through the procedure of making a New Media task from initial recording to concluding arrangement on YouTube ( or other picture sharing sites ).

Appears authors from Traditional Media are hungry to acquire about this new manner of administering content. Course, the Author 's Strike of 08 was all about the perplexed issues around this emerging medium you said it authors necessitate to get paid what their worth and for their content. Still, it Holds clear we all need to bound into this occident and participate, otherwise we could lose some great chances.

The eve was inaugurated by the WGA 's Elizabeth Flak, who heads their New Media section. So, TV author turned college prof, Roseanne Welch gave an elysian and fiery address about New Media 's chances for proactive authors, citing Diablo Coty who moved from blogger to Oscar victor.

Doug Welch gave a colorful presentment on the unparalleled pros and cons of the different types of cameras assuring the audience that `` it Holds fiddly, but not all that perplexed. '' From the HD Cam to the Somersault Camera, looks like there are many cheap slipways to make a web pic, webisode or web picture.

The key to the production procedure comes downwards to one important element; Sound. The sound must be equally clean as possible. Picture can get past with to a lesser degree stellar quality, but if spectators ca n't hear it, they 'll tune out ( or snap away! ).

Enter top WarnerBros., Sound Supervisor and three clip Emmy awarding victor, Michael Lawshe. `` Sound is to a higher degree 1/2 of picture '' Michael states, doing the point that in the production stage of a task, sound necessitates special attending. You can deal with second-rate picture but if the sound is garble or there Holds much of ground noise, there Holds rattlingly small you can make. Doug break in with an easy regulation of ( sound ) pollex; `` Merely make n't enter noise in the first spot. ''

So how make you get better sound? `` Cognize your camera '' Michael designates out. He attended to speak about external mikes and camera mics.

So, they shared the stairs and tips to redacting and exporting with an important tip; `` Believe about your shoot before you commence. '' Great advice therein new epoch of on-the-fly production. The more prepared you are, the less clip you 'll need to pass in a dark room, redacting your undertaking.

We larned how to upload to YouTube, how to implanted and distribute through one-stop-shop sites like TubeMogul where you can share your content easily and efficiently across internet.

The eve terminated with audience interrogations. I was astonished by the sum of proficient enquiries like which redacting package is the best, which is the preferable picture streaming package, sharing and marking and more slightly geeky enquiries!

Impressive and revealing. I believe New Media holds attained critical mass and the union of new and not-so-new media is beginning to rattlingly spring.

The best advice in how to get upward to hasten with this rapidly turning and altering cosmos of engineering comes from Doug Welch; `` you merely should get out there and have it away. '' It Holds not about flawlessness, it Holds about action.

Check out New Media Interchange for the up-to-the-minute intelligence, info and events.

I 'm heading back in to the field this hebdomad for more New Media and Mixer Media events.
